Finding the right financial advisor for you can be easier than you might expect, if you follow a few guidelines:
- Do Not Hire A Stock Picker: The truth is that the last thing you need is another opinion about which funds to invest in and which stocks to purchase. You can find that information on the Internet. Instead, you need someone who has intimate knowledge of tax laws and insurance regulations. After all, this is the person who is supposed to reduce your taxes on earnings and investment gains, and whose is going to ferret out investment opportunities far beyond the stock and mutual fund market. This is the person who has to devise ways to protect your assets from spurious lawsuits and from your children's creditors and spouses. Retirement fund managers need not apply.
- Ask The Right Questions: Find out what level of experience a potential adviser possesses.
- Check References.
- Beware of a Sales Pitch: A good adviser asks a lot of questions and listens to your answers. You are hiring a partner to aid you in protecting your assets. An advisor who is essential a salesman cannot do that.
- The job of the advisor is to help you achieve your goals, not to set them.
- Once you have found someone who has the right credentials, personal style, and level of service for you, listen to your gut. Hiring a personal financial advisor is ultimately about trust. Ask yourself if you can trust this person to achieve your goals and to tell you the truth about the financial decision you have to make. If the answer is yes, then it is time to shake hands and sign the papers.
Jeremy is a personal financial advisor who knows the relative merits and tax costs associated with a host of investment options. The job of a financial advisor is to allow one to create wealth and then to preserve the wealth that you have spend a lifetime accumulating, and then to create low-cost strategies for transferring that wealth to the next generation or for leaving a philanthropic legacy.
In essence, we help people and provide solutions for their problems.
